Mold is a common problem for Mississippi homeowners due to the hot and humid weather, which creates the perfect environment for mold to grow and thrive. Left unchecked, a mold infestation can eventually cause significant damage to your home and pose a serious hazard to you and your family’s health.

Fortunately, several time-tested natural home remedies do a good job at eliminating mold without resorting to over-the-counter chemicals. These will work great for small patches of mold, but larger infestations will require professional mold remediation.

5 Natural Remedies for Removing Mold

  1. Vinegar
Long used for general cleaning around the home, vinegar is also a powerful and cost-effective mold remover, capable of killing most types of fungi. To use, pour undiluted white vinegar into a spray bottle, apply liberally to the affected area, and allow it to sit for at least an hour before cleaning the area with water.
  2. Baking Soda
Another versatile household helper that can be used to tackle mold, baking soda is completely safe to use around children, pets and people who are sensitive to chemicals. Simply use a small amount, a quarter of a tablespoon or so, with water to form a paste. Apply the paste to the moldy area, scrub with a brush, and rinse with water. For added effectiveness, you can add some vinegar to the mix for a foaming, fizzing cleaning paste.
  3. Hydrogen Peroxide
Commonly used for its antibacterial and antiviral properties, as well as tooth whitening, hydrogen peroxide is also an antifungal agent and can be used to kill and remove mold, especially on porous surfaces like wood and fabric. Put 3% hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle to treat the affected area, let sit for 10 minutes, and wipe dry. Its bleaching properties can also help remove mold stains.
  4. Lemons
A natural deodorizer and antiseptic with bleaching properties, the high acidity of lemon juice breaks down mold and leaves behind a clean, fresh scent. Simply squeeze fresh lemon juice on the moldy area, let sit for 5 minutes, then wipe with a damp cloth.
  5. Tea Tree Oil
One of the most effective natural mold killers, tea tree oil is a powerful fungicide that can eliminate mold and help to prevent it from returning. To use, mix a teaspoon of tea oil with a cup of water in a spray bottle, shake well, apply directly to the moldy area, and just let it sit and dry without rinsing.
